I have become a fabric hound. Really, it's an obsession. I just bought a bunch of really cute prints on Etsy.com. I love Etsy. Not only is it a place to showcase (and hopefully sell) some of my handywork, but it's a place to connect with other people like me and get inspiration as well as supplies. The fabric store I'm liking the best right now is Fabric Supplies by Charlie. Click here to check out his huge selection. I think many of these fabrics can be used to make great baby gifts. Whether it's the simple stuff like burp cloths and bibs, or the fancy - fancy like my knot dresses, these fabrics rock. In case you didn't already know, Etsy is an online community of folks who make handmade items and sell them in their Etsy stores. It's such a fun place to shop since you know so much care and hard work went into making everything. Better Hair Clips

I've upgraded the quality of hair clips and barrettes I've been making. I invested in some really cute ribbons and appliqués and some swarovski crystals. Pictured here are a custom initial barrett, a really sweet baby chick with a crystal egg and a darling bug in shades of blue and green also with swarovski crystals. Perfect Gift For Baby got a new website recently. It's now being hosted under it's own URL. It has a sleeker and more professional page layout. The product section has been expanded. We're offering burp cloths, bandana bibs and our new line of hair clips and barrettes for little girls. Some of the hair clips are small enough to even be worn by babies...we even know some babies who were born with enough hair to wear our clips!
Pictured here is a gift set that features a burp cloth and coordinating hair clip that is customized to include the baby's initial. Sooo cute! This set was made for baby Katherine who was born yesterday! We hope she enjoys using the burp cloth (sooner) and the hair clip (later).

Hair Clips - What Could be a More Perfect Gift for a Little Girl?!

I am not sure if I should be proud of myself or if I should be ashamed...but regardless...I bought a glue gun and I'm not afraid to use it. Seriously, these days you can make all kinds of cute stuff with a glue gun. I think hair clips and barrettes are about one of the best uses I've found so far. After some trial and error, I figured out how to make them so that no glue shows or is even detectable. While I'm in confessional mode...I should also confess that on the same shopping trip to my favorite craft supply store I also bought a tool for affixing crystals, rhinestones, studs, etc. No it's not a Bedazzler, but it serves the same purpose while working a little differently. Since I wanted to embellish hair clips, I needed something that works on smaller stones, so I went for a tool that uses heat to attach glue backed stones. It works great as long as you have a steady enough hand to get the stones in the desired place and not burn the ribbon in the surrounding area. Again, some trial and error and I'm good to go. Cute Gift for a New Baby Boy

Look at this really cute gift for friends of ours who just had a new baby boy (finally a baby boy...all my friends have been having girls and we've just gotten so overwhelmed with pink!). I decided to make him a set of burp cloths in two patterns of scotty dog fabric that I think is just so cute right now. I know baby boys have lots of thinks with dogs on them, but these two prints were too cute to pass up. I used them on the outside of the gift since they add such a decorative flair on their own. The inside of the box has a book and stuffed animal gift set that I found at a store in my neighborhood. These burp cloths made from cloth diapers really are one of my favorite gifts to give to new parents. I've got a pair of pink ones, a lovely pair of gender neutral orange/leopard print fabrics and a cow print sitting on my sewing machine right now so I better get back to sewing...I have a baby shower coming up this weekend!

Christmas T-shirts

For Christmas I wanted to make t-shirts to give as gifts for my nieces. I decided that they might have fun with personalized t-shirts that have their name on them. But I wanted to add a twist so I put their sister's name on their shirts. So you have the shirts pictured "I'm with Sophie" and "I'm with Zoe." My daughter was going to be with them for the Christmas holiday so I decided to make her a t-shirt too, so we could have an excuse for a cute group photo. Since she doesn't have any siblings, I decided we'd go with a cute saying for hers "I'm with the band." At any rate, I think personalized t-shirts are a perfect gift for any baby.

So you can see I've been having fun with the iron on transfers. My husband helped me pick out a cute font and then worked up the technical aspects of making the pink arrows and flower for the backgrounds in PhotoShop and getting the sizing and printing of the transfer correct (move over Geek Patrol!)

Diaper Cake

A super fun decoration for any baby shower is a diaper cake. I first learned of diaper cakes years ago when a co-worker made one for an office baby shower. It was super cute, but made from cloth diapers. Years later, I received a diaper cake at my own baby shower. This one was made from disposable diapers and I just loved it! It was such a cute idea and fit with the theme of my shower. Diaper cakes make a great centerpiece for the food or gift table. Everything on the cake can be used and appreciated by mom and baby.

Here is a picture of the cake I made for a friend's shower just last weekend. The theme of her shower was "classic pink" so I chose muted decorations and soft pink ribbons for trim. The white diapers kept it classic!

Today I cutsied up some of my daughter's plain t-shirts with iron on designs. I have other iron on pages that I can print designs onto from my computer. I can say whatever I want! What would you put on your baby's t-shirt if you could say anything?

I added a banner ad to the bottom of the homepage on my web site www.perfectgiftforbaby.com. And it's almost as if good karma was in the air. They have a weekly drawing (sign up for emails from them) and I won! My prize was a cute sippy cup holder. I can't wait to get it and try it out since my daughter just got her first sippy cup. I hope she likes it. I like the Mom4Life.com website. Not only does it have great gifts for babies, it also has tons of stuff for expecting moms too. All of their items are products from moms. I feel like I understand where they are coming from. Maybe some day a product from perfectgiftforbaby.com will be sold on Mom4Life.com.

Baby Leg Warmers

Look what I can do! I got ambitious today. I had been looking online at some hot baby products and noticed Baby Legs. Essentially they are baby leg warmers. Once again, I felt like the price point was too high for such a simple product. How hard would these be to make? Obviously I wasn't going to knit my own pair, so I tried to think of an existing sock that I could modify. I ran by our local Kmart and

came home with a pair of women's knee high socks. I cut the heel out and cut the toe off. Once everything was sewed back up, I had my own pair of Baby leg warmers. Next came the try on test. Once my daughter woke up from her nap, I slipped them on and viola! Total cost for the socks was $2.99 compared to $12 for the Baby Legs product. Doesn't she look cute!

Burp Cloth Designs

Here are some designs I've been trying on burp cloths. Right now I am liking a stip of funky material down the middle third of the cloth diaper. Then I add satin ribbon trim to the top and bottom edges. I think it gives a nice well rounded / finished design feeling. The back of the diaper is left plain in case you need it for ultimate absorbency.

Green Cow Bandana Bib

I made a gift set for my friend Leslie's new baby boy. He will be sporting the green cow bandana bib and spitting up all over a matching green cow burp cloth. Here are pictures of the burp cloth and bandana bib. I packaged them together with the bib wrapped around the burp cloth and decorated with the simple white ribbon. I hope Leslie and her new baby boy love these perfect gifts!

Perfect Gift For Baby Website

So I figured I'd test the waters with a beta version of a website. Go have a look at perfectgiftforbaby.com. Right now I'm piggybacking it off of another site I have hosted, but if I get a good enough reaction, I'll launch Perfect Gift For Baby on it's own. For starters I'm offering the following baby gifts: the bandana bibs, the burp cloths (made from premium Gerber diapers) and a baby gift set combo that includes a matched bandana bib and burp cloth set. I need to get a page up that shows all the fabric swatches and ribbon trims that go on the burp cloths and the material choices for the bandana bibs. As far as ordering the baby gifts, I will have to start off with doing it via email and checks. I just can't see forking over the money up front for a check out process on the Perfect Gift For Baby site and a credit card processing partnership. Let's hope I'm blessed with so much demand that I can quickly afford those features! If anyone has feedback on how the beta site looks, please leave comments.

Flower Headband

Sometimes my baby daughter gets mistaken for a boy. Even when she is wearing pink. But not when she's wearing a pink flower headband! Some friends suggested I put bows in her hair, but she doesn't have enough hair yet. I made this flower headband for my baby by sewing a satin ribbon into a tube and then putting a 1/2 inch width strip of elastic down the middle. I made the ribbon just larger than the desired finished diameter of her head - 16". I then drew up the elastic to about 10" so that the headband would be stretchy. I sewed the elastic into the ends of the scrunched up ribbon tube and sewed it all shut. Last, I used a few hand stitches to secure the flower over the seam in the ribbon. Perfect! I think it turned out pretty cute for my first try. I'd love to try this again with stretchy lace instead of ribbon. I'm not sure yet if it will be one of my perfect gifts for baby, but I've had a few other friends whose baby girls have been mistaken for boys. So maybe they will be getting a flower headband gift for their baby girls from me soon!

Bandana Bib

One of the perfect gifts for baby is a bandana bib. Here's a picture of my daughter wearing a dark red bandana lined with the softest leopard print. It's reversible too, so she can have two different looks and it goes with more of her outfits. Isn't she the cutest!

Welcome to my blog, Perfect Gift For Baby. I'm a new mom. What do new mom's do? They go shopping for cute things for their baby. Then all their friends get pregnant. So I went shopping in baby boutique and designer baby gift stores in search of the perfect gift for baby. I saw the cute burp cloths and bibs made from diapers and bandanas. The prices for the baby burpies and bibs in the gift stores were too high! I wanted to give baby shower gifts to all my expecting mother friends and mom's of new babies so they too could have their own designer burp cloths and bibs, but at good prices. So this new mom said "I can do that!" I handmade burp cloths and bibs and starting giving them as baby shower gifts and as gifts to new mothers. The new mothers and babies loved them. These baby burp cloths and baby bibs have become the perfect gift for baby! I get so many compliments on their high quality. I only use premium Gerber diapers and the softest cottons for my burpies and bibs. Best of all, I know they get used since my daughter couldn't live without her burp cloths (we go through 4-6 a day - she's a happy spitter!) and bibs to keep her outfits clean.
